Newscaster

The Newscaster is the monthly news letter for the Indianhead Fly Fishers. The current President's message will be here and the Newscaster archives will follow.

Club Message

I wish I could regale you with tales of fish sought and found, but the harsh realities of age, weather, construction delays, etc., have curtailed such opportunities. The flow reports on the Weiser have not been encouraging, and I have come to regard Little Orphan Annie’s song as a repeated lie. I have been consoling myself with memories of similar springs somehow making the transition from dearth to wealth, looking for that first day when all those things finally cooperate, and I feel "THE TUG". I’m hoping we can plan some group outings really soon.

Looking at the weeks ahead:

May14: Our regular monthly meetings at Idaho Pizza: you can buy dinner, and join the fun. Board planning meeting at 6:00, and then the membership meeting at 7:00pm. On the agenda for the later, is our "spring" raffle, administered by our capable MC, Mike. Lots of prizes, $$$, and flies are If you have ideas, skills, or anything that would contribute to the growth of our club, bring them to the earlier session so we can talk it over.

May 21: Flytying at the library - not yet sure what the subject fly for the 7:00 pm session will be, but I expect Ray/Royce/whomever will come up with something interesting. I plan to be there at 6:00 to get any interested beginners started on basic techniques.

May 31: The annual Weiser Community Pond clean up: In cooperation with the City of Weiser, the local Elks lodge, Arrowheart, and other groups, we show up and improve the pond. Lots of mowing, weeding, habitat improvement, etc., then burgers and dogs on the grill.

June 1: Oregon Free Fish day: We may be able to staff a club booth at some fairly close fishing hole to drum up some new members. I have heard the name Malheur Reservior bandied about.

June 8: Idaho Fish Free day. We are planning to set up a booth at the Weiser Community Pond to advertise the club, and our activities. If we have the volunteers, we might be able to set up a fly casting area to introduce basic skills to some new folk

The consensus of the board is that we continue membership meetings, through the summer, but without planned programs. You might want to wear hipboots. Unless someone wants to step up otherwise, we will suspend the monthly flytying sessions June, July and August, resuming in September.

Contacts have been made with the folks who plan the Fiddle Fest , coming up during the 3rd week of June. We need volunteers to plan and execute some type of outreach booth, perhaps with casting and/or flytying demonstration/learning components.

Early August is the time for the Idaho Conservation Officers Association youth camp, which occurs up at Trinity Pines. The club has committed to providing a scholarship for one young attendee, as a memorial to Al Sillonis. I have copies of their flyer if you would like one., If you know a person who will be 10-12 years of age this August, who would like the experience, but needs financial assistance, let one of the board know. There is, as always, a deadline, so don’t delay. More info available at the Idaho Conservation Officers Association youth camp web page HERE .

Expect the annual picnic/potluck on the 13th of August. Check our website frequently, for spontaneously planned fishing trips.

Maybe Annie wasn’t lying, just a little confused on the timing.

Fishing Report:

Mann Creek trout have finally turned on. Water temperature reached 52 degrees and started clearing on May 3rd. The trout are taking just about anything that's in front of them. Stomach contents are still showing Daphina and a few small chironomids. The Crappie and LMB have started moving to the beds but not really eating yet.
